Indian women have always proved that they are not any less when compared to men in any aspect. They are on par with men when it comes to making the nation proud. Here is evidence that would strengthen this statement. We all know that the Olympic Games which are organized once in four years are considered as one of the most prestigious events in Sports. Many countries including India compete with each other in this plethora of games. However, it is unfortunate that a country like India with such a huge population has not managed to perform great over all these years. But when we consider the role of women in winning medals for our country, it just fills our hearts with great pride. Let us learn about the five Indian women at Olympics who won medals and made us all proud:
1. Karnam Malleswari:
Karnam Malleswari competed in women’s weightlifting 69kg category and won a Bronze medal for India in the year 2000 at Sydney Olympics. She became the first woman to win an Olympic medal for India, inspiring girls in India to take up sports and pursue their career. The margin with which Malleswari lost the gold and silver was very thin. Earlier to winning at the Olympics, Malleswari even won at World Championships (two gold and two silver) and also few at the Asian level. Her winning moments are still the most cherished ones in the history of Indian sports which paved the road to Indian women at Olympics
2. Mary Kom:
By now you might have well got acquainted with this name as we already have a Bollywood movie made on Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead role. Mary Kom won a Bronze medal in the London Olympic 2012 in the game of boxing in the 51kg category. Mary Kom is a five-time world champion and has even won the Rajiv Khel Ratna Award as a token of appreciation from the government of India. Though there was not much encouragement in the field of boxing in India, Mary Kom did not take a step backward. Even though she took a break from boxing for taking care of her family after marriage, she returned with a bang!
3. Saina Nehwal:
If it is anyone who has made Indians think of Badminton in India after Pullela Gopichand, then without a hint of doubt, it is Saina Nehwal. Saina won a Bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012. Certainly, she had a lot of pressure on her shoulders as the entire nation was counting on her in the hope of a medal. Saina did not disappoint us and displayed great mettle at all stages of the game.
4. Sakshi Malik:
Sakshi Malik gave us the first ray of hope in the 2016 Rio Olympics when everybody felt that India is going to return with zero medals. She won a Bronze medal for India in wrestling under the 58kg category. From the point of scoring a very low of 0-5 to defeating her opponent with an 8-5 majority, Sakshi made all her attempts to win for her country.
PV Sindhu aged 21 won a Silver medal for Badminton in the Rio Olympics 2016. She entered the Olympics with not many expectations from the people but consequently, she kept defeating all powerful opponents at every level until she faced Carolina Marin in the finals. She faced the World No.1 with great determination and even won the first game. Though she did not win the finals, she won the hearts of the entire nation by boosting all those girls who dream of being champions in sports.
We have five names in the list of Indian women at Olympics so far, but we hope that very soon we get to see many more achievers on the list.
