Stand-up comedian Sunil Grover a.k.a. Gutthi with his extraordinary comic skills have already made a mark in the cine-world but his journey from a common Haryanvi man to stardom was not a cake walk for him. He belongs to Dabwali city of Sirsa district of Haryana. They lived in Old Mandi of Dabwali. His ancestral house is still there, his uncle is staying in this house. Although his uncle has rebuilt the house. Sunil’s 4 uncle lives in Dabwali.
Sunil’s father got transferred to Chandigarh. Along with him he also went to Chandigarh. While living in Chandigarh, he worked in the theatre and also did the course on acting. He was discovered in his college days by the late comedian Mr Jaspal Bhatti. From there, getting motivated to make advancements towards this field, he gradually moved into an acting career and reached the ultimate destination for all aspiring wanna-be actors and artists – Mumbai.
Rise to the stardom
From there on, he (Mr Gutthi) got tremendous support and encouragement from Mr.Jaspal Bhatti. He worked with him in a couple of TV shows, bringing him in the eyes of many directors and producers. He also displayed his skill in versatile acting in India’s first Silent comedy show, SAB TV’s Gutur Gu, though for the first 26 episodes.
He was the voice behind Sudarshan a.k.a. Sud on the very popular podcast "Hansi Ke Phuware” aired on Radio Mirchi. That entire show was hosted by him.
The steep rise and eventual fall
His signature move in career and income expansion came when he came up with Kapil Sharma in the stand-up comedy show Comedy Nights with Kapil and became most loved, popular and sought-after playing the comical character, Gutthi. He left the show, owing to some issues for some time and later again made an entry with the new character as the father-in-law to the show’s lead Kapil Sharma. Although it was indicated by some unknown sources very near to him he was once again considering leaving the show. The most infamous, rugged and wished-not-had-happened mid-flight brawl with Kapil is considered possibly to be the reason for the non-settlement with Kapil for a truce, thus this fall-out taking place.
Sunil Grover had teamed up with Manish Paul to do a comedy show on Star Plus, titled Mad in India but his solo, unsupported reincarnation for the new show as Chutki( the concept of Gutthi) could not lure the audience. The show came ended soon and he ultimately took a step back to his old, expected to be evergreen show-Comedy Nights with Kapil.
He has been appreciated for his versatile acting abilities which fit him into any character he plays. He also has been known for his ability to mimic various Bollywood actors. Kya Aap Panchvi Fail Champu Hain was the best part of his mimicry as he not only copied Shahrukh Khan's voice but also acted like him. Currently, he has left The Kapil Sharma Show making people nostalgic of the characters "Dr Mashoor Gulati" and "Rinku Bhabhi".
Hopes for the future
After a solo live show in New Delhi on April 1 and an Indian Idol episode, he has given a statement that "I've always been attached to the idea of performing live. Now I am more convinced than ever that there is a lot to be explored in the live medium," to DNA.
More statements from him –
"We got a full house and an enthusiastic crowd. I can't tell you how grateful I am for the love I've received," he said talking about his solo live show, where his friend from The Kapil Sharma Show, Kiku Sharda also joined in. "This show was planned long before the entire episode (the controversy with Kapil) happened. I've been performing live for years now. That won't change," DNA quoted him as saying.
But going live doesn't mean television is not an option for Sunil Grover. "I haven't given up television. In fact, I had a lot of fun shooting for the Indian Idol 9 finale this weekend," he told.
Taking into consideration the fact that he is a versatile actor – from Gutthi to that doctor, and had also made a debut in a Punjab film Vaisakhi List in 2016 with Jimmy Shergill, it can be expected of him to make more advancements towards turning his love for live shows and part-time acting in movies to a full time, more enriching and fulfilling career.
