According to a new study, children who eat fish at least once a week get better sleep and have a higher IQ. Researchers revealed that omega-3 acids in fish, improve kid’s intelligence and found that those who ate more scored 4.8 points higher on an IQ test than children who do not fish. They also reported getting a better night’s sleep, which is linked to higher intelligence. As per the findings, there is a link between fish and height intelligence, which led the researchers to suggest introducing kids to fish as young as 10 months old to improve overall well being throughout their lives. The omega-3s found in fish have health benefits that can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attack and can improve sleep.Other studies have also associated fish to improved cognitive function. This is the first study that has linked the fatty acids to better quality that can lead to higher IQ. 

Researchers encourage parents to introduce their children, as young as 10 months old, to fish as long as it doesn’t have bones in order for them to grow a liking to the flavour. 

Children should be introduced to it from a young age. Introducing the taste early makes it more recognizable. Parents should put in the effort to do this, especially in a culture where fish is not as commonly served or smelled. Children are highly sensitive to smell. If they’re not used to it, they may not eat it at all.

The researchers suggest starting children on fish by at least the age of two then gradually adding more fish into the diet over time.

Around 500 Chinese children between 9-11 years had been asked how they had fish in the previous month, with options ranging from “never” to “once per week.” The verbal and nonverbal skills of children were compared from their IQ tests.

It has been found in the study that children who ate fish once a week scored 4.8 points higher on the IQ tests than those who never ate fish. Those who ate fish only sometimes scored 3.3 points higher on IQ tests.

Parents also answered questions about sleep quality. The children who ate more fish had no trouble going to sleep, indicating better overall sleep quality.

The poor cognition and lack of sleep have been associated with the antisocial behaviour and Omega-3 supplements tend to reduce antisocial behavior, so it’s not too surprising that fish is behind this.

The researchers hence recommend incrementally incorporating additional fish into the diet.

Given the young age of the study group, researchers chose not to delve deeper into the details participants reported about the types of fish consumed, though they plan to do so for work on an older cohort in the future. They have also added that eating fish can lead to better sleep pattern, better school participation and performance and other practical outcomes.
